It is much harder to force a donkey into doing something he deems risky. Unfortunately, the “freeze response” is also responsible for the stereotype of the stubborn donkey. Not to say it’s impossible for them to buck or bolt, but it’s a rare occurence! This “freeze response” makes donkeys and mules more reliable on the trail. The donkey would rather stop and investigate. When spooked, the horse prefers to run first, think later. You’ll quickly notice that the donkey is much more stoic than the horse. I mean, they’re both equines, with equine brains, right? ![]() I’ll admit, when I started training my rescue donkey, I immediately started with horse training methods. Your horse training methods are out of the window. Traditional horse saddles usually won’t fit a longear. Their backs are flat with little withers.
